Idaho Reports will return January 2009

"We're going to be experiencing . . . pain," says state economist

(12-12-2008) State economist Mike Ferguson said that over the next year Idahoans will continue to lose jobs, the state's unemployment rate will continue to rise, and sales and income revenues will continue to decline. Ferguson noted the U.S. economic downturn is comparable to that of the early 1980's. He said the effects of that "depression"-like economy trickled down to Idaho, which was also hit with major job losses. Ferguson said the current forecast is the worst he has seen in years, but it does not yet reach the magnitude of that earlier era. View the Powerpoint slides (pdf).

CURRENT QUOTE

"It will make us look very, very hard at the last 10, 15 years and expansion of government and say, 'What exactly should our role be?' It will probably ask the recipients in the past of many of the services of government to participate... in some of the government services that they're now getting for nothing."  -- Gov. Butch Otter -- on the effect of the economic slowdown and state budget shortfall   [December 5, 2008]
